Methylene Blue is anti-aging, can help improve mood and memory, has anti-viral properties, and boosts energy in the mitochondria.

Overview

Methylene Blue (methylthioninium chloride) was the first antimalarial drug ever used in medicine, and today it is used as a nootropic to increase memory, mood, and longevity. Even the World Health Organization has added MB to its list of Essential Medicines.

MB Benefits

  • Improve Mitochondrial Function: targets all four mitochondrial complexes, and donates electrons to the Electron Transport Chain (ETC), which increases ATP production to provide more cellular energy.
  • Cognitive Enhancement: MB can function as a cholinesterase inhibitor, which increases the amount of acetylcholine (ACh) available. ACh is the neurotransmitter in the brain responsible for memory, attention, and motivation.
  • Anxiety & Depression: inhibits monoamine oxidase (MAO) that prevents the breakdown of monoamine neurotransmitters (melatonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin), which leads to an increase in these neurotransmitters.
  • Neurodegenerative Diseases: mitochondrial dysfunction is a key aspect of these diseases. By repairing the mitochondria and providing sufficient energy for the brain, MB can help the brain function effectively and combat (and prevent) age-related cognitive decline.
  • Antiviral: there is a growing amount of research that shows that MB inactivates many viruses including Herpes, Ebola, coronaviruses, West Nile, Hepatitis C, and Zika. Even more promising, when MB is combined with light therapy, these synergize together resulting in significantly enhanced antiviral activity.

How Does Methylene Blue Work?

Methylene Blue is an electron cycler that donates and accepts electrons. Mitochondrial respiration is increased directly by MB through its interactions with the electron transport chain. There are four protein complexes that make up the ETC that sit inside the mitochondrial membrane. These are in charge of generating ATP — which provides energy to drive many processes in living cells and MB targets all four complexes in this respiratory chain.

Why Is MB Important?

Mitochondrial dysfunction can negatively impact your entire body and is especially detrimental to your brain because the neurons in your brain rely almost entirely on mitochondria-derived energy.

As a nootropic, Methylene Blue quickly crosses the blood-brain barrier. It improves mitochondrial efficiency and respiration, acts as an antioxidant, and increases brain cell lifespan. Resulting in improved memory and mood.

MB has also shown much promise as an antidepressant, an antimicrobial, and potential improvement in neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, etc).

Safety & Side Effects

Methylene Blue is extremely safe, especially when the purity/potency is tested. Because of the potential risk of Serotonin Syndrome (a life-threatening condition), we do not combine MB of any dose with SSRIs, SNRIs, or drugs that increase serotonin levels.

Pro Tip: MB is a great IV to combine with the brain-boosting nootropic Piracetam or the neuropeptide Cerebrolysin. These two together make up our ‘Brain Clarity’ protocol to increase mental performance, reduce inflammation, decrease oxidative stress, and oxygenate the cells.

NAD+ IV is also an extremely potent addition when paired with MB for a complete mitochondrial overhaul combo followed by the FastVitaminIV®.
